Should we be concerned about germs in floating tanks?

Before COVID-19, we were of course nerding up on the risks of germs, bacteria and viruses in floatation tanks and what we could do to keep them as clean as possible. Roy Vore, a microbiologist and expert in water sanitization, did a great talk at the Float Conference in 2018 where he explains the relative risks of various kinds of bacteria.

To sum up what Roy had to say:

  1. The high concentration of salt prevents respiratory, dermal and gastrointestinal pathogens from multiplying, so they will eventually die.
  2. The particle filtration system will catch 99% of all nasty particles and the UV chamber will get the rest
  3. You would have to drink liters of the water in the tank to ingest a dangerous amount of any pathogen in there.

Is it possible to catch Covid-19 during a float session?

Roy Vores has recently made a statement about Covid-19: “At this time, epidemiologists believe that the virus is spread in droplets from sneezing and coughing. When someone else inhales the droplet the virus enters the upper respiratory tract and may cause infection. Based on other similar viruses this happens when the two people are within 6 feet of each other. There is some indication that touching surfaces contaminated with droplets can cause infection but this is not the main way the virus is spread.  SARS-CoV-2 is not likely to be spread in float tanks, swimming pools or spas.

When you come for your float, you will only have to interact with our float master, who will maintain social distancing throughout the visit. Remember the surfaces inside and outside the tank will be cleaned after each float, and the surfaces will be wiped down.

  • 550 Kg of epsom salt in each tank creates an inhospitable environment for bacteria and viruses

  • Water sanitization – we always have active amounts of cleaning agent in our water, but not enough to harm your skin or hair

  • Between each float, the water is passed through a fine particle filter and a UV chamber. The movement activates the cleaning agents in the water too.

  • All high-touch spots are cleaned in the float rooms and reception area. This includes door handles, shower handles, the float tanks and surfaces.

  • Guests will shower before and after their float and hand sanitizer will be provided on arrival

  • We are always generous with allowing cancellations for guests who show signs of illness and encourage them to practice self-care at home

Even though floating is a very low-risk activity, be assured that we are taking every possible precaution to ensure the safety of our guests. We hope to see you soon for your next float.
