What is traditional Thai massage?

Thai massage is a unique form of bodywork that combines acupressure, assisted yoga postures, and Ayurvedic principles to create a truly holistic and therapeutic experience. Originating in Thailand, this ancient practice focuses on the body’s energy lines known as “sen.” By applying rhythmic pressure along these pathways, the massage therapist aims to release blockages and restore the natural flow of energy throughout the body.

Unlike many Western massage techniques, traditional Thai massage does not use oils or lotions, and it is performed on a floor mat, allowing the therapist to use their whole body, including feet, knees, elbows, and palms, to achieve a deep stretch and apply pressure. This approach is believed to promote healing, reduce tension, and enhance overall well-being.

Thai Massage FAQ

What are the unique benefits of Thai massage?

Thai massage is a unique blend of acupressure, assisted yoga stretches, and energy line work that enhances flexibility, improves circulation, and relieves muscle tension. By stimulating pressure points and stretching the body, it promotes deep relaxation, reduces stress, and supports better posture and recovery. Often called “lazy yoga,” it allows you to experience the benefits of deep stretching and movement without the effort, leaving you feeling balanced, refreshed, and restored.

What should I wear?

We recommend that you wear loose, comfortable clothing that allows for easy movement, similar to what you’d wear for yoga or light exercise. Thai massage involves assisted stretches and deep pressure techniques, so avoid tight or restrictive clothing, or anything with buttons or zips.

Is Thai massage for me?

Thai massage is a great choice if you enjoy deep pressure, stretching, and a more active form of bodywork. It’s ideal if you:

✔️ Have muscle tension, stiffness, or joint pain and want relief through movement and pressure.
✔️ Prefer a massage that incorporates stretching and mobility work, rather than just relaxation.
✔️ Want to improve flexibility, posture, and circulation.
✔️ Enjoy or are open to a more dynamic, hands-on approach where the therapist moves your body into assisted stretches.

If you prefer a gentler, more traditional massage style or if you have a recent injury, or a condition that would make it difficult for you to get down on to the mattress, Thai massage is probably not for you.

What can I expect at my Thai massage appointment?

At your Thai massage appointment, you can expect a unique and interactive experience that blends deep pressure, assisted stretching, and rhythmic movements.

Before the massage, we will ask you about any injuries, pain or areas of focus. You will stay fully clothed throughout. The session takes place on a padded mat on the floor.

During the treatment, your therapist will use their hands, thumbs, elbows, knees, and even feet to apply deep pressure and stretch your body. The massage follows energy lines (Sen lines) and involves a series of guided stretches similar to yoga poses, where you will be moved into different positions – lying on your back, side, stomach, and even sitting up. Expect deep pressure and stretches that may feel intense at times, but should never be painful.

After the massage, you’ll likely feel deeply relaxed, looser, and more flexible. It’s common to feel an energy boost or a sense of mental clarity. Drink plenty of water to help your body flush out toxins and rehydrate after the deep work.

Thai massage is both therapeutic and energizing, making it a great option if you want more than just relaxation—it’s a full-body reset!

Can I get a Thai massage treatment whilst pregnant?

Yes, you can get a Thai massage during pregnancy, but it’s important to wait until after the first trimester. The treatment will be adjusted to avoid deep pressure on the abdomen and certain acupressure points, with gentler techniques and side-lying positions for comfort. Always consult your doctor before booking if you have any complications or concerns.
